Is it me or has anyone noticed a particularly large number of concrete lions on the lawns of Belleville residents? I have counted over fifty sets so far (Yes, I have way too much time on my hands) A downtown park has two poorly cast bronze lions recently installed with no explanation or attribution. Between the lions is some sort of throne raised up on a concrete pad. Strange....... Is this a "Public Art"program fronting for some secret "Cult of the Lion"? Maybe it is a Lion's Club thing? When I came across a resident doing yardwork, I asked about the significance of his yard lions. He held his gaze on me for an uncomfortable period of time and then said in a curt, cryptic tone,.......... "It's decoration, that's all it is, It doesn't mean anything". He turned his back, making it clear he was not going to discuss it with me any further. He resumed raking through the smoldering leaves wafting an odor suspiciously reminiscent of the rare, exotic "incantaba" ceremonial incense generally found only at Haitian Brujeria ceremonies.

Just at that moment, one of our "street persons" came rolling by on his bicycle exchanged what I percieved as a  knowing glance with the homeowner. This was the third time that day that I had seen this particular bicyclist. Was he on to my suspicions? Then I saw a small plush "TY" lion strapped to his front basket.Though it was a warm fall day, a chill ran through me. I beat it out of there.

Midwestern Gothic cult goings on or aggressive lawn ornament marketing? You tell me.

R.M. from Los Angeles has sent the following explanation.

Heavenly Guardians!

Stone Lions have long held a mythological presence in Chinese folklore. They are said to be excellent guardians, rivaling dragons in tenacity. Even today they are still prominently used to guard homes and temples. Legend has it that these stone lions will keep the occupants of the home safe from any harm spiritual or otherwise. However many business tycoons ensure that they are placed outside their offices as well.

Who says that St. Clair County is not multiculturally diverse?
